Welcome to Beers and Such, the greatest beer review blog I have ever had the pleasure of writing where I review craft beers, sometimes not craft beers, and occasionally whatever else i want to review. I also accept reviews from you, my legendary followers, so go ahead and send me a review you would like to see on this shiny beer review blog.
Today I'm taking on Organic Sweet Potato Rye by London Brewing located in London, Ontario. Surprise! It's reddish, as far as my colour blind eyes can tell, and according to the can, it's organic, local, and cooperative. It's also 5.5%, which isn't the only thing that matters, but let's not pretend it's not the alcohol we drink for, ok?
At first glance you might think that it would be happy to wash your car if you asked because that would be pretty cooperative, but you would be mistaken. It turns out cooperative means that the brewery is owned by the employees, which is pretty cool by my standards. Maybe that committee style of management has something to do with sweet potatoes cinnamon and ginger being in beer..?
Let's see what those cooperative folks over at London Brewing.
Ok, ok. I see what's going on here. They've made a pretty tasty beer that a guy can feel pretty good about drinking. Now, at first sip, I didn't taste anything distinctly sweet potato, cinnamon, or ginger. It tastes pretty good: it's clean, it finishes like a champ, and it's worth a try.
Then I ate some all dressed chips, and I can taste the cinnamon and ginger pretty clearly. It has a fall flavour, if that makes sense. Not pumpkin pie or anything, but definitely baked goods that gramma would have made when the leaves start changing colours while they die slowly before our eyes.
That got weird. Sorry.
The point is, it's pretty good beer. I can imagine many scenarios where I would drink this beer and share it with my friends. I'm not on the organic train, but for those people that are, this is a great choice for you. I can't imagine there's a lot of choices out there if you're super strict about the organic business, but rejoice! Have one of these and feel good about things.
I don't know if organic sweet potato rye beer has a perfect glassware designation, but I'm going out on a limb here and recommending you just get your set of pint glasses out of the cupboard and have at it. If you don't have a set of pint glasses, try these ones on for size. They're pint sized! Ba dum tiss.
I'm not even sorry about that one.
My rating: 7/10. I like this one.
My lovely wife is my dedicated and dependable second sipper. She prefers wine to beer, even good beer, so this one wasn't to her liking.
My wife's rating: 3/10
