Nautical Disaster Dry Hopped IPA by Lake Of The Woods Brewing Company

Hello there and welcome to Beers and Such, a beer review site that explores craft beers from anywhere I can get them.

Today, I am looking at a beer that is near and dear to my heart; Nautical Disaster Dry Hopped IPA by Lake Of The Woods Brewing Company way up north in Kenora, Ontario. How can beer I've never tried be near and dear to my heart you ask? It's the name of the beer, which also happens to be the title of a song by The Tragically Hip, a band that wrote the soundtrack of so much of my life.

"I had this dream where I relished the fray..."

This beer is a very light golden colour, very hoppy aroma, and it's unfiltered with medium carbonation. It packs a punch with 6.4%, but it's nothing you can't handle. The can says it's born and bred in the north, and if you've even been up in Northern Ontario, you know it's a beautiful place, so it must be a good beer.

Let's have a drink and see what's come out of the north.

"One afternoon 4000 men died in the water...here. And 500 more were thrashing madly..."

Wow, that's some hoppy beer. It's a bright, citrus flavour right off the bat. The middle stanza is odd...it releases the hops, but hold this refreshing sensation in your mouth more than an actual taste, then it rolls nicely into a bitter finish that doesn't make a nuisance of itself. I quite like it.

I was a little worried it would be super hop-heavy when I caught the aroma of the hops, but it's nicely balanced and refreshing. I could see how more that a couple of these might make their way past common sense and get an unsuspecting gentleman right sideways. I have taken precautions and only bought one, so I'll be good to go in the morning.

I would serve this beer in an IPA glass, of course.

"Anyway, Susan, if you like our conversation..."

So many memories come to mind when I hear the words Nautical Disaster and this beer takes me back to a lot of great times with great friends. Too many of those friends have drifted away over the years, and that in itself is another nautical disaster.

My rating: 9/10. I love this beer, and highly recommend it (especially to The Hip fans).

My lovely wife is my second sipper and bless her heart for tasting all these beers she doesn't like. She's a trooper.

My wife's rating: 0.5/10. OUCH! That's harsh, but she doesn't like IPA's or The Hip, if you can believe that.

"I was in a lifeboat designed for ten and ten only. Anything that systematic will get you hated..."

Rest in Peace, Gord, and thanks for all the memories.
