Welcome to Beers and Such; the best beer review site I've ever run. I review craft beers for the most part, and occasionally other things that catch my eye.
Today I'll be reviewing a hometown brew called Dead Elephant IPA by Railway City Brewing Company right here in glorious St Thomas, Ontario. Now you might be saying to yourself, "Why would anyone name a beer after something like a dead elephant?".
Well before we get into the review, let's take a little walk through history, shall we? About 135 years ago, a circus came to the railway city, as St Thomas was known. Who doesn't love a circus? Especially at a time when toasters hadn't even been invented yet.
As it turns out, the elephant in the circus - a conspicuously large fellow named Jumbo - didn't enjoy this circus very much as he was struck and killed by one of the trains railway city was known for. Soon after railway crossings were installed. There's even a big statue of the dead elephant at the west end of town.
Thankfully, the rendition of Jumbo was of him before the unfortunate train incident.
And that, my friends, is a brief and accurate history of the dead elephant associated with this beer. You're welcome.
Now, about this beer. It's a nice amber colour, it's lightly carbonated, and packs a hefty 6.5% of liquid joy. I like the look of it and I'm thinking I'm going to like the taste, too.
Let's find out.
Yep, it's good. It comes out of the gates swinging with a hop flavoured baseball bat, but it doesn't last very long before it sticks a bitter patch on the back of your throat and fades nicely to black. There's not much of an aftertaste to speak of, but as hop heavy as it is to start, it finishes pretty well.
That being said, I really don't think I could drink enough of these to get out of control. I like this one, and I would recommend anyone that like IPAs to give this one a go, but for my taste, it's not a repeater.
Go get your bad self a set of IPA glasses for this one if you plan on having a few friends over for a beer.
My rating: 7.5/10
My wife is my second sipper and as I've mentioned on occasion she hates IPAs, and this is sadly no exception.
My wife's rating: 1/10
There you have it, friends. Dead Elephant IPA by Railway City Brewing Company in my very own, St Thomas, Ontario is a beefy IPA not for the weak or the faint of heart. It's a good sit down brew but only for a short stay. Go to railwaycitybrewing.com to see the rest of their small batch offerings.
