Alright folks, I'm friggin excited to be reviewing a this beer. Coffee Vanilla Imperial Stout by Sawdust City Brewing Company in Gravenhurst, Ontario. I love coffee, I love stout, and I'm on good terms with vanilla. This should be a treat.
Be warned my friends, this beer is not only black as night with almost no carbonation, it's a whopping 9%. That's not a typo; it's 9 friggin %. That's intimidating to a guy like me that doesn't really drink much.
Wait...You have a beer review website and you said you don't drink much. That doesn't make any sense.
At first glance, I would agree. However, I drink a different beer every time I have one, and I tell you guys all about it. After that beer, I don't have another one. That being said, I have had far too many beers on far too many occasions not to be fully aware of what overconsumption of a 9% beer can do to a guy.
And with that bit of rambling out of the way, let's taste this bad boy.
Hot damn! That's friggin delicious. Wow. I'm so glad it's as good as I hoped it would be. You just never know what you're in for and dashed hopes are not uncommon. This beer does not disappoint.
Great job everyone at Sawdust City Brewing. Pat yourselves on the back for this one. It might be easier to have someone pat your back and then you can return the favour. Either way, hell of a job done everyone.
The coffee flavour is very pronounced but not overdone and it's an excellent lead in. It transitions nicely to the toasted malt flavour stouts are known for, and then it finishes silky smooth with a sweet vanilla aftertaste. That is a great taste adventure right there.
As I mentioned before, this beer is a sarcastic 9%, so it's also quite a feat that this beer is so easy to drink. It's also very dangerous if you have plans the morning after a night of indulging. Cancel those plans early and be ready to spend the day suffering.
As expected, this beer should be enjoyed immensely and in a stout glass. I'm pretty sure I would enjoy this out of a sippy cup, but as an adult I'll use a glass in case anyone happens to see me.
My rating:12/10 it's that good.
My lovely wife is my second sipper, and thought she hates her some IPA's, she's down with the dark side.
My wife's rating: 7/10. That's a pretty solid rating from her, so count that as a 10 or so.
