Hello and welcome to Beers and Such, the craft beer review site that makes no promises and delivers non-expert opinions on craft beers. Come on in and let me show you around.
Today I'm going to be tasting Cobblestone Stout by Mill Street Brewery in Toronto, Ontario, Canada's unofficial capital city. As some of you may know, I am a huge fan of black beers, so as always, I'm excited to try this one.
For anyone out there familiar with Guinness, you'll know what a shot of nitro will do for a delicious beer, and this one has a shot of nitro. I don't want to say I was disappointed not to see the famous cascade effect that other nitro beers have when they are poured, but...
Cobblestone does have a light, creamy head on it, so that is nice to see. At 4.2% this is a very light stout compared to some of the other ones on this blog, but that's not a bad thing. Personally, I drink these beers to get a taste of what different breweries are doing with their brews, so alcohol content doesn't really factor in to my decision to buy a particular beer.
Let's get down to business.
That tastes an awful lot like a stout. It's coffee flavour from the toasted malt is really nice, then it goes a little squirrely in the middle before finishing with a nice bitter note.
What's going on in the middle though? I can't really describe it...it's like it has a hole in it. I know that doesn't make sense, but that's the only way I can explain it. It's not a bad flavour or anything, it's just kind of hollow. It's almost like the flavours pause after the coffee flavour and before the finish.
I'm sure someone more informed that I am would have a better way to describe it, but for now I'm going with hollow. As I said, it's not a bad flavour, but it is a subtraction.
All that being said, this is a good beer. I like it, and I would gladly serve it to my friends. Unless they hate stouts, then that would just be a jerk thing to do. I would have to get myself a set of stout glasses if I was going to drink a few Cobblestones with my friends. There are stout glasses for a reason, Karen.
My rating: 8.5/10. It's good, it's black, and the non-hollow flavours are really nice.
My lovely wife is my faithful second sipper. No matter how many beer she tries and hates, she's always there to taste the next one and give her rating.
My wife's rating: 1/10. Harsh? I think so.
