This is the first review I've done of my hometown brewery, Railway City Brewing Co's Black Coal Stout. I'm excited to try this beer. I love stouts and porters, and it's especially exciting that this was made just a short drive from my house in St Thomas, Ontario.
First, it's absolutely beautiful to look at in the glass. It's black as night, light creamy head, and I can smell the coffee in it. I love coffee. It's a hefty brew at 6%, and according to the can, it won the gold medal at the the 2016 Canadian Brewing Awards.
Let's taste this bad boy:
It's delicious. The coffee taste is unmistakable, and there's a hint of chocolate in there as well. It's lightly carbonated and though I wouldn't call it a light feeling beer, it's not exactly heavy either. I could see drinking a few of these on a crisp autumn day with some friends around a last of the season barbeque. Sausages and red meat with some kind of potato to round it all out.
My rating: 8/10
I like this beer, and I will drink it again many times in the future.
My wife is my second sipper and she doesn't care for the black beers. This is no exception.
My wife's rating 2/10
